Pottstown, PA, May 18, 2023 –
“’Light up High Street’ was an idea that grew out of the resolve to assist businesses after they experienced disruption resulting from the COVID 19 pandemic. Creating this canopy of lights accomplishes many things… it enhances public safety and brings visual appeal to the Downtown for visitors, which both ultimately assist Pottstown’s Downtown businesses in their post-pandemic recovery.” said Peggy Lee-Clark, Executive Director, Pottstown Area Economic Development (PAED).
As Pottstown Area Economic Development (PAED) looks to the future for the 5.5 sq. miles of the Borough of Pottstown’s businesses, placemaking projects that create an inviting atmosphere are a priority.
In Fall 2021, PAED launched a fundraising campaign with several local businesses and individuals leading the way. The campaign efforts continued into 2022, while measurements, sketches, and planning took place. The lighting style and ambience was intended to compliment those already in place at Smith Family Plaza on High Street, which regularly hosts various organization’s events, whose attendees enjoy the overhead lights. Consistency in the design and final appearance were key factors, as well as the commercial grade quality of the lights themselves. Installation by a reputable electrician who was willing to adapt in this unique and ever-changing project was critical for the success. Through Pottstown’s Fromm Electric, PAED identified A N Lynch Co. Inc. to install the lights. “As a 3rd generation owner of a local electrical construction company, I took on the project because I have many memories of Pottstown as a child,” commented Nev Lynch, owner, A N Lynch Co. Inc. “I am hopeful people enjoy shopping, dining, and visiting High Street. Lighting up High Street presents a safe and appealing environment to be out on the town.”
Building owners and business owners were presented with the canopy light concept, running from building to sidewalk edge, creating a warm glow of lights overhead for pedestrians to enjoy. Participation from the various businesses and buildings was paramount to make this project impactful. As Jim Hoffman, Owner of Laserworx Trophy & Engraving, 236 E. High Street, established in 2008 and preparing to celebrate their 15th Anniversary, shares, “We were on board right away with this project because we think it will make the town more beautiful at night and has the added bonus of making the town safer. When the whole downtown is lit up at night it is going to give Pottstown a unique charm that not many places have. We can’t wait to see the end-product!”
‘Light Up High Street‘ will continue throughout the Downtown blocks of High Street, as PAED works diligently on additional funding opportunities and coordinating with Pottstown’s Downtown building owners and businesses.
