Pottstown’s first KEEP project receives greenlight to advance to the next phase of development
The Pottstown Sustainability Park Project (PSEP) has received their Permit By Right from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Waste Management. PAED notes that this is another major milestone in the many phases of development for this project. The issuance of this permit is confirmation that as green technologies develop, business projects will need to be evaluated in a variety of ways. The material that is referred to as feedstock is pelletized and is no longer waste once that happens. Therefore, this site is not considered as a waste handling or recycling facility. In January 2022, Pottstown’s Borough Council approved site plans for PSEP’s location at 451 Keystone Boulevard. Each one of these milestones brings the addition of an important employer to the Pottstown Area one step closer to reality.
As Jay Lankford, PSEP Partner & Property Owner, shares, “This letter/determination is acknowledgement of the importance of looking at green energies in innovative ways. Investing in a post-industrial Pottstown with this technology with a highly sought-after product in renewable fuels and green energy… is a way for us to leave a fingerprint on the future…We are leading the way for others in the Commonwealth to innovate sustainable practices.”
According to Terry Planton, Chief Executive Officer, PSEP, “This pipeline-ready Renewable Diesel (not biodiesel) is just the beginning of many opportunities to create green and re-usable energy and material. Large manufacturing retailers are striving to become landfill-free. With Pottstown as the Corporate Headquarters, this a scalable model that can be rolled out in multiple US markets and eventually global.”
Pottstown Sustainable Energy Park (PSEP) will use 11 acres within the Borough of Pottstown, located on a former industrial brownfield, to process clean commercial waste from large production plants in Montgomery, Berks, and Lehigh counties. The park will use a green gasification process that produces virtually no emissions or other environmental consequences and keeping more than 200,000 tons of waste out of landfills. PSEP is the first major project under the 2018 Keystone Employment & Economic Plan, based on the redevelopment area alongside the Keystone Boulevard Corridor in the Borough of Pottstown, PA.
As the PSEP team acknowledges, PAED was instrumental in providing the roadmap for the project, working alongside them every step of the way. PAED continues its important work to identify projects within this plan that will have substantial economic impact for the Borough, attracting, retaining, and growing the business of tomorrow.
Pottstown Area Economic Development (PAED) provides services to businesses and organizations seeking to invest, expand or relocate including assistance with site selection, commercial and industrial real estate development, access to resources and workforce development. PAED’s efforts stimulate investment, which helps maintain and enhance the tax base, retain and create job opportunities, and restores, utilizes or removes under-utilized buildings.
