Arts and culture are important elements of Pottstown’s ongoing revitalization and economic development. Nothing makes that point better than the story of Steel River Playhouse.
The not-for-profit performing arts center opened its current facility in downtown Pottstown in 2008 featuring a 250 seat main stage black box theater in what was originally the JJ Newberry Department Store. More recently, Steel River Playhouse has invested in a new facade, high-tech marquee and an outdoor plaza leading into a funky urban interior.
Each year, the Steel River Playhouse produces over 90 performances and brings more than 10,000 people to the downtown — audiences, students, artists, donors and volunteers from throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. Performances are diverse and include musicals, comedies, dramas, concerts, and class presentations, including performances for the entire family. A comprehensive education program is also offered throughout the fall, winter, spring and a summer camp.
